Best beaches in Santorini you can’t afford to miss

The beaches of Santorini stand out as attractions in their own right, each offering a sight unlike any other island. The distinctive and breathtaking morphology of the land is heavily influenced by volcanic activity. Past volcanic eruptions not only molded the island but also contributed to its unique character and extraordinary natural beauty. Consequently, the beaches are equally distinct, featuring volcanic rocks and sand. The diversity of colors, including white, red, and predominantly black sand and pebbles, embellishes the beaches of Santorini, creating varied and picturesque landscapes.

Red Beach

The Red Beach in Santorini, is a rare and picturesque destination characterized by its red shore and unique landscape. It is located approximately 8 km from Fira. The beach, boasts a contrasting red and black mountain, blue crystal waters, underwater hot springs, and a mix of red sand and black pebbles. Despite its fame, the beach is often crowded due to its popularity. The limited space on the beach includes a few sunbeds and umbrellas.

Vluchada Beach

Situated on Santorini’s southern coast, Vlychada is easily accessible by car or bus, just 13 kilometers from Fira. Its awe-inspiring cliffs, shaped by natural processes involving the volcano, wind, and sea, are a distinctive feature. With a lengthy stretch of shore boasting shallow waters and dark volcanic sand, it embodies typical Santorini beach characteristics. Despite not being crowded, it offers ample amenities like sunbeds, umbrellas, and a canteen for visitors to relax and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings. Vlychada’s natural beauty makes it a worthwhile visit.

The Sailing and Yachting Center can also be found in Vlychada, nestled in the charming port near the beach. The marina attracts small yachts and boats, and nearby traditional taverns offer a delightful dining experience featuring fresh fish. Another attraction in the vicinity is the Tomato Industrial Museum, housed in a former tomato factory. Visitors can partake in guided tours that delve into the traditional methods of tomato cultivation and production, a well-known industry in Santorini.

Vlychada Beach is distinguished by its unparalleled lunar landscape, captivating all who visit and making it a unique gem among Santorini’s beaches. It stands out as the most atmospheric beach on the entire island.

Ammoudi Beach

Located at the base of the village of Oia on Santorini’s northwest coast, the port of Ammoudi offers various access options. One can reach it by car from Oia village, descend over 200 steps on foot, or opt for the more traditional donkey ride, a common practice in Santorini, although we don’t endorse it.

Ammoudi is a beautiful small cove with crystal-clear waters and fishing boats dotting the sea, showcasing its traditional charm. Lined along the waterfront are several fish taverns, providing a perfect setting to savor delicious fresh dishes while enjoying the sound of waves against the backdrop of the expansive Aegean Sea. The location is ideal for peaceful and romantic strolls.

While there are no sandy beaches, sunbeds, or umbrellas, the experience of swimming from the dock is unique. Alternatively, following the path past the taverns leads to an impressive diving area with exceptionally clear waters. Along the path, there are high rocks suitable for extreme dives, catering to strong swimmers. The panoramic view while swimming includes the breathtaking Oia settlement perched on the caldera in the middle of striking reddish cliffs. Ammoudi also serves as a starting point for boat tours to the neighboring island of Therasia.

Monolithos Beach

Approximately 9 kilometers from Fira on Santorini’s eastern coast, Monolithos Beach features a significant rock with the church of Agios Ioannis. Unlike nearby bustling Kamari Beach, Monolithos offers a quieter atmosphere, accessible by rental car or bus. The island’s National Airport is located in the Monolithos area, where visitors can also find the historic Tomato Canning Factory, Santorini’s first of its kind..

Monolithos Beach is family-friendly, with shallow waters and a playground area, making it popular with families and locals. It features typical Santorini characteristics, including black and grey sand and clear waters. One section offers amenities like sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lifeguard tower, along with sports facilities like a football pitch, basketball and volleyball court. Another section provides seclusion, ideal for privacy and relaxation amidst natural shade. Rock formations, shaped by salt and wind, adorn the seaside, resembling those at Vlychada Beach. Nearby cafes, bars, taverns, and restaurants offer traditional dishes to conclude a restful beach day.

More beautiful beaches

Santorini has more beaches worth visiting. First we suggest Aghios Georgios, which is a non-organized beach ideal for serenity and relaxation. Additionally we recommend Eros, with its white-brown cliffs, naturally shaped by waves and wind over the years.
